Devil’s Golf Course
The Devil’s Golf Course is a large salt pan on the floor of Death Valley. It was named after a line in the 1934 National Park Service guide book to Deathe Valley National Monument, which stated that “only the devil could play golf on it’s surface. This rugged hard texture is from large halite (salt) crystals that have been eroded by rare water and wind.
A large lake (Lake Manly) once covered the Death Valley floor to a depth of 30 ‘ (9 m). The salt in the Devil’s Golf Course formed when the lake dried out and left the evaporated salts and minerals behind. Weathering sculpted these salts into hard, intriguing shapes. These salt beds are more than 1000’ (300 m) thick.
