Description
The salmonberry is a scrub in the rose family - Rubus spectabilis - that is native to North America. The leave have three leaflets and the flowers, about 2-3 cm, are a beautiful deep pink. The berries are large, yellow - orange and looks like a raspberry. These berries ripens in June-July. They are found in the moist NW forests and along streams.
The salmon berries are edible, taste good raw and when processed into jams and jellies. They were an important food for the indigenous people. They were often eaten with salmon (thus the name).
