A Cormorant drying it's wings - a common pose for this bird.
The Double Crested Cormorant ( Phalacrocorax Auritus) is a member of the family Phalacrocoracidae (Cormorants and Shags) which are common bird throughout the world.
It is a larg ediving bird with a stocky body, long neck and hooked beak. Breeding adults are iridescent, greenish black with orange/yellow skin on the face and aqua coloured eyes. Juvenile birds are browner.
The Cormorant is an opportunistic feeder and predate on a number of fish species, generally less than 13 cm long, such as herring, minnows and stickleback as well as juvenile salmonids. Foraging dives are from the surface of the water to depth les than 15 meters.
Similar birds are the Pelagic Cormorant and the Brandt's Cormorant in British Columbia.
