Artist's Description

Sun streaming through one of the windows at Trekroner (Three Crowns). Trekroner, a sea fort in Copenhagen's Coast Defenses, was built between 1787 and 1827 as the first fort in the coast defenses and was later extended and modernized. It is located at the key point in Copenhagen's seaward defenses, by the narrowest channel in the approach to the port of Copenhagen. The fort was built to protect the port approach and to prevent bombardment of Copenhagen from the sea. Trekroner was taken out of active service as a sea fort in 1922 and definitively decommissioned in 1932. In 1984, it was acquired by the National Building Preservation Foundation for the sum of three kroner, after which it has undergone staged renovation. From

The original location of Trekroner Fort was a few hundred meters north of the current one. In 1713, three old line ships were sunk to form the basis for a battery. One of the ships was called Trekroner, and she gave her name to the fort.
