Description
Medicine Lake, Jasper National Park, on a cloudy day in the Canadian Rockies. This is a very unusual lake - in that the water backs up in the lake during the snow melt in the spring and summer, then slowly drains, like a full bathtub. The water drains into a large subsurface system of limestone caverns and sinkholes. This system of caves and drainage is one of the largest in the world. More than 24,000 liters of water go down the Medicine Lake's drain every second. The cave drainage system beneath Medicine Lake resurfaces below Maligne Canyon, more than 17 km downstream. Twice attempts were made to plug the drain, once using old mattresses, the second using magazines - neither attempt were successful.
