Description
Telegraph Cove is located on the eastern shores of Northern Vancouver Island. It is in the Johnstone Strait and Broughton Archipelago region, a region rich in First Nation history for more than 9000 years.
It is the homeland of the Kwakwaka’wakw Bands and it is rich in history.
Telegraph Cove’s history began as a lumber mill and salmon saltery in the early 20th century and acquired its name in 1912 when the Superintendent of Telegraphs was shopping for a lineman’s station and northern terminus for the telegraph line from Campbell River to the south. Thus Telegraph Cove became the official name for this tiny fishing village of boardwalks and little wooden building built on pilings. Boats were the only means of transportation. Today there is a pave road to the hamlet which has retained it quaint character and is a popular time for tourists in the summer. Whale watching companies were first established here and today whale watching and bear watching trips are popular in the vast marine park of the Broughton Archipelago and in the mainland inlets. Also popular are activities such as salt water fishing, hiking, caving, ocean kayaking and diving.
