Description
An adult bald eagle coming down for a landing.
The Bald Eagle is a bird of prey native to North America, especially abundant in Northern USA, Canada and Alaska. It is found close to large bodies of water - large lakes and the ocean where there is abundant food and large trees for nesting.
The Bald Eagle is an opportunistic feeder, but it feeds primarily on fish. It will however scavenge on garbage and carcasses.
The adult eagle is primarily dark brown with a white head and tail. The males and females look identical, but the females are about 25% larger than the male.
The young and juveniles are mottled brown until sexual maturity is reached at about four to five years.
The Bald Eagle is both the national bird and national animal of the United States of America. The bald eagle appears on its seal. In the late 20th century it was on the brink of extinction in the contiguous US, but has since recovered and has now been removed from the list of endangered species (2007)
