Description
California Redwoods
Coast Redwoods ( Sequoia Sempervirens) are found along the northern coast of California from Humboldt County to Big Sur in a series of parks. The Avenue of the Giants is a historic stretch of Highway 101 in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park and an amazing display of these giant trees. They are the worlds tallest trees, many over 200 feet tall with the tallest reaching over 350 feet. Their bark is thick and rich in tannins which helps resist fires and serves as a natural insect and fungi repellent. Their shallow roots allow them to easily absorb the fog that drips from their needles, an adaptation that keeps them hydrated during Californias dry summers. Underground, the roots intertwine with those of other redwoods giving them the collective strength to withstand wind and floods.
The coastal redwood is an evergreen that can live to be 1200-1800 years or more some of the oldest living things on the planet.
