Artist's Description
The Great Crested Grebe is the largest member of the grebe family found in Europe. It is an excellent swimmer and diver. The adults are unmistakable in summer with head and neck decorations. The young are distinctive because their heads are striped black and white.
The Great Crested Grebe breeds in vegetated areas of fresh water lakes and are found across Europe and Asia. It nests on the water's edge. Usually two eggs are laid and the fluffy, striped young grebes are often carried on the adult's back. The parents will each identify their favorite which they alone will care for and teach.
The species was hunted almost to extinction in the UK in the 19th century for it's head plumes, which were used to decorate hats and ladies' undergarments. The birds are now again a common sight.
About Inge Riis McDonald
Welcome to my FAA portfolio. I hope you like what you see. Photography has been a big part of my life for many years, and as I get older, it is becoming more so. To me photography is all about seeing and I don't just see things one way in this exciting and versatile world. What I often try to do - is tell a story with my image - or invoke a feeling with mood and light. Photography is a continuing...
