Description
A farrier specializes in equine hoof care which include the trimming and balancing the horses' hooves and placing shoes on their hooves. A farrier skills also include those of a blacksmith in that he/she needs to make, and adjust their metal shoes.
Hot shoeing, also called hot fitting is a common practice among farriers. After the hoof has been trimmed and rasped and is ready for the new shoe - the farrier will heat the shoe in the forge and place it briefly on the hoof to sear the place where the shoe will attach. The purpose is to create a smooth surface between the hoof and the shoe and to seal cut horn tubules, making them less likely to dry out in dry climates or absorb moisture in wet climates. The intense heat also kills any fungi or bacteria that may damage the hoofs.
