The Black Turnstone is one of the defining species for the rocky, wave-battered Pacific Coast. It blends in well with the dark rocks. It winters from Alaska through Baja California, this little bird found on the shores of the Salish Sea on Vancouver Island. It is rarely found far from the vicinity of spraying waves.
It is a stocky, medium-sized, short legged shorebird with a short dark bill and dark to orange legs.
