Description
The eastern cottontail, Sylvilagus floridanus, has speckled brown-gray fur above, reddish-brown fur around its neck and shoulders and lighter fur around its nose and on its undersides. It has big eyes and a tail that is puffy white on the underside. In the winter its fur may be more gray than brown.
The Eastern Cottontail has expanded its range into the Lower Mainland of Canada from introduced populations in Washington State. Sylvilagus floridanus alacer, originally native to Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana, was introduced into western Washington in 1927 and 1931. Cottontails are now common in the Lower Fraser Valley along dikes and in agricultural areas from Tsawassen to Chilliwack. S. f. mearnsi, native to southern Quebec, Ontario, and eastern and north-central United States, became established on southern Vancouver Island from a release near Sooke in 1964. Since then it has spread northward along the eastern side of Vancouver Island. Presently the Eastern Cottontail is common as far north as Campbell River, and some are present as far as Sayward.
