Description
Indian Peacock or Peafowl
There are three species of peafowl, both originating in Asia, the blue peafowl from India and Sri Lanka and the green peafowl from Myanmar, Indochina and Java. The third is the Congo peafowl native only to Congo. They are related to the pheasants and part of the Phasianidae family, known for the males beautiful iridescent colours and piercing call. They put on an impressive display of their beautiful train of tail feathers as part of their courting.
The Indian (blue) Peacock is iridescent blue with green/blue tail feathers marked with distinctive eye spots and both the male and female peafowl have a crown or crest of small feathers at the top of their head.
Peafowl in the wild are forest birds. They nest on the ground, but roost in trees. The birds are common in gardens and parks throughout Europe and North America as a beautiful ornamental bird.
