Description
Garry Oak.
The Canadian Garry Oak ecosystem is unique to the southeast coast of Vancouver Island and the neighboring smaller Gulf Islands. There are a couple of small patches along the Fraser River as well.
These ecosystems arose during a warmer climate period 7,000 to 10,000 years ago, and at this time there were two different types of Garry Oak ecosystems: Deep soil sites, which consisted of many shrubs, trees, grasses, and wildflower meadows; and shallow soil sites- many of which were on rocky areas and were surrounded by spring flowers, grasses and mosses (GOERT, 2005). On Vancouver Island you see primarily the shallow soil ecosystems which today are being protected and approximately a third of the original system still remain in the Nanaimo and Nanoose areas.
