Description
Bigleaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) is the largest maple in Canada, reaching heights of up to 36 metres. In a forest the crown of the tree is narrow and few branches on the lower half of the tree. The trees growing in the open have a large, broad crown supported by a few large, spreading limbs. The leaves are five-lobed and are the largest of any maple in Canada, measuring from 15-30 cm across. They are shiny, dark green in the summer, paler on the underside. In the fall they turn yellow and brown.
