Description
The Golden Canyon – Gower Gulch Loop is one of the more popular hikes in Death Valley National Park and is a true delight. Morning is the best time to hike the loop, when temperatures are cooler and the sunlight highlights the colorful landscape. The sides of the canyon are made up of red mudstone and colorful mosaic conglomerates. Occasional broken pavement offers a reminder that there was once a road through this canyon until a rainstorm washed it out in 1976.
At a little over 3 miles round-trip, depending on where you stop, this hike gives you a great view of the unique beauty Death Valley has to offer. It has gaping canyons, massive boulders, waves of plant-less terrain and even a large red rock called the Red Cathedral at the end. At the upper end of the Gower Gulch is the 20 Mule Team Canyon Road which is also the site where different parts of the original Star Wars movies from George Lucas were filmed.
